    Hi from Southern California

    Hi everyone,
Just wanted to introduce myself.. I am Paul living in Agoura, Ca and I just picked up a 1956 Vespa VL3. It is my first Vespa and first Scooter. I have had 5 motorcycles in the past.... I have worked on chevys for years and bugs for a while and needed something small to play with and thought this would be the perfect "bug of motorcycles"... it was stored in a garage for 4 years when I got it at the beginning of Dec.. I since rebuilt the carb, cleaned the tank, changed the oil and its now running again... just need to figure out the BIG hesitation it has from a start...
Anyways... I will put a picture when I am not using my phone to post...
Looking forward to learning and working on it soon!

    Thanks,
    Paul

Hi Paul. Yeah those old carbs really suck @ sucking fuel from the nozzle when they're worn. Here's a "quick fix" you might try: there's a small air hole near the mouth behind the air filter, plugging or partially restricting it will dramatically richen up the low-speed mix. Just run it without the filter and find/cover the hole with a finger or pencil, etc. to see if i'm right. -john

    Hi Scootershack
Thanks!...I will look into that... I appreciate any input... I was trying to figure out the screw(with locknut ) on the side of the carb near the idle circuit(I think) and what it might help or hurt... typically there's default settings but I cannot find ANY info on these old carbs... do you know how far turned out is correct ?... I think mine was/still is about a 1/4 turn out from bottom...
    Thanks again....Paul

OOOOH, you've got the later "improved" carb... yeah that's the low speed adj. those are lotsa fun to play with while the eng.s running! Back it out 2 full turns and see what happens -only your scooter can tell you when it's right on. If no difference, somethings still clogged. If much better, ride her 'til she's good and hot, then try 1/4 turn increments - you want to unscrew (enrich) just enough to cure the hesitation, any more will just foul everything with soot and make it smoke even more than normal. -john

    Smile

Awesome John... thank you.. its the weirdest screw because at the end of the tapered point is a hole and two side holes... never seen anything like it...I thought it should be out more because of the lock nut but the holes threw me off and added doubt... I will try to mess with it tomorrow night... will back it out two turns and see how it drives.. if it gets out the hesitation I am going to be smiles from ear to ear... and get it out on the street... can't wait to try your advice..THANKS
